Strawberry Margaritas

Margaritas are not my beverage of choice but add some fresh strawberries and I am interested. I didn’t expect to find this recipe in a Tex-Mexican cookbook but because the tequila is 100% agave azul, handcrafted, small batch in Jalisco, Mexico it can certainly be referred to as a Mexican beverage. I also used key limes from Mexico…

There are different versions of this refreshing beverage but I was drawn to the addition of Chambord liqueur which was not in any other recipe I found. Chambord is produced from raspberries and blackberries, Madagascar vanilla, Moroccan citrus peel, honey and cognac. So you can imagine what flavor this added to these strawberry margaritas.

This simple recipe comes from one of the many America’s Test Kitchen Cookbooks: The Best Mexican Recipes:Kitchen -Tested Recipes Put the Real Flavors of Mexico within Reach.

Very refreshing – a perfect (but potent) cocktail using fresh strawberries!

Make 3 large margaritas or 6 smaller ones…

Cheers!

Strawberry Margaritas

This recipe makes a lot of margaritas – I divided the recipe in half as my shaker container would only hold 1/2 recipe at a time.

  • 5 oz. strawberries, 1 cup
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (I used key limes – sure wish I had a juicer to juice all those little limes)
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (I used Meyer lemons)
  • 1/4 cup superfine sugar
  • Pinch salt
  • 2 cups crushed ice (I gave my electric ice crusher away – I am having second thoughts about doing that)
  • 1 cup 100 percent agave tequila, preferably reposado (from  Mexico)
  • 1 cup triple sec
  • 1/2 cup Chambord

Process strawberries, lime juice, lemon juice, sugar and salt in a blender until smooth about 30 seconds. Divide in half and work with half the recipe at a time. I do not strain the mixture as I like the texture and of course more flavor.

Divide 1 cup crushed ice among 3-6 margarita glasses. My glasses were large and would make about 3 drinks. Strain juice and discard solids if desired. Add half of the juice, tequila, triple sec, Chambord and 1/2 cup crushed ice; shake until thoroughly combined and chilled, 30 seconds or so. Strain into ice-filled glasses and serve. Repeat to make more…

ATK says it is the perfect balance of sweet, sour and tart flavors. The 100 percent blue agave, which is aged for 12 months, had a mellow flavor that blended with the other ingredients.

Sugar/salt mixture for the rims… 3 tbsp. salt and 2 tsp. sugar, or you can use all salt or all sugar. I didn’t add…

  1. i love chambord – well i did back in my drinking days 🙂 THis looks pretty and sounds lovely.

  2. Nothing says you are having fun better than a strawberry margarita, unless you are also drinking it on the beach – this looks fabulous and I like the idea of adding the liqueur to spice up the flavor!
