Phyllo Cannoli Bites for Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day! Are you looking for a simple, quick, no-bake dessert to serve any time of the year? Did you know there are three flavors of mini phyllo shells you can use depending on your filling?

Yes, you can not only buy the regular phyllo shells, but gingerbread and chocolate. My favorite has to be chocolate and is perfect for this cannoli filling. Double chocolate with the mini chips and chocolate shells.

Phyllo Cannoli Bites for Valentine's Day

  • 15 phyllo shells (chocolate flavor preferred)
  • 2 oz. mascarpone cheese
  • 2/3 cup whole milk ricotta cheese
  • 3 tbsp. confectioners’ sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract (or use paste)
  • dash of cinnamon
  • orange zest, finely grated to taste (I will add the next time)
  • 1/4 -1/3 cup mini chocolate chips (sweet) or use cacao nibs (bitter) (see Note below)
  • candy hearts and bakery bling with gold hearts and red sprinkles

Combine both cheese, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and orange zest – blend well. Add 1/4 to 1/3 mini cacao nibs or mini chocolate chips. Refrigerate until ready to serve; it’s best to assemble right before serving.

Pile the filling into 15 mini shells; garnish with more chocolate, pistachios (chopped) or bakery bling hearts and sprinkles. Serve right away…

Note: Cacao nibs are small pieces of crushed cacao beans or cocoa beans, that have a bitter, chocolatey flavor. The beans are dried after harvesting, then fermented and cracked to produce small dark bits. Instead of a soft texture of chocolate chips you get a crisp texture with these nibs.

They are the least processed cocoa products on the market and lower in sugar than other chocolate products, making them a healthier alternative for chocolate lovers like me. Highly nutritious, providing protein, fiber, healthy fats, minerals and plant compounds like flavonoids.  They are a good thing!

    • Thanks Ronit – I bought them over 2020 holidays and never got around to making a few versions with the different flavored cups. They might be a seasonal item – the chocolate – yum 🙂

  1. I don’t eat many sweets, but wow. These look wonderful. I didn’t know you could get the phyllo cups in chocolate. I’ll have to check with my local store, amazon.com!

    • Thanks – little bites of decadence! I did buy the shells over the past holiday season. I think the gingerbread (don’t recommend) and chocolate were available since 2018. I hope Athens continues to sell the chocolate…

  2. Ohh, I had no idea you could buy phyllo shells – and flavoured ones at that! What a great little party trick – and these look amazing! I would have definitely liked a few of these for Valentine’s Day!
