Witches’ Fingers Cookies

It’s that time of the year when I am thinking about Fall, apples and pumpkins and such and then of course one of my favorite holidays, Halloween.  I seem to be on a “witches fingers kick” with Chocolate Covered Halloween Pretzle Fingers so now I am adding some very cute cookies you can make. Martha Stewart calls them “Ladies Fingers”.

I found this idea/recipe on All Recipes and changed some of the ingredients and directions. I have my Mom’s Sugar Cookies recipe which is very similar but decided to use this other one.

Witches' Fingers Cookies

  • 2 sticks butter, softened
  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. almond extract
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2-2/3 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • kelly green paste to color the dough if desired
  •  whole almonds
  • liquid red coloring to paint the almonds if desired
  • red decorating gel,  raspberry jam or use royal icing colored red to glue the nails to the fingers

If you are going to paint the nails, do this ahead of time so they have time to dry. Dilute a few drops of liquid red coloring, mix well and paint one side of the almonds. Allow to dry on scott towels – I did this overnight.

Combine the butter, sugar, egg and extracts in a bowl until light and fluffy. Mix the flour, baking powder and salt in a separate bowl. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture. Chill dough overnight. The dough can be frozen for up to a month at this point.

Preheat the oven to 325°F and lightly oil a cookie sheet unless it is non-stick.

Measure about 1 tsp. to 1 tbsp. of dough (depending on the size of the fingers). Press an almond into one end of each cookie. Squeeze sides of cookie below almond and again at center of finger to create “knuckles”. Make shallow cuts crosswise with a sharp knife to create wrinkles. Once I had a tray full of cookies made I chilled them in the refrigerator for 15 minutes so they would not spread too much while baking.

Bake for about 18-20  minutes. You do not want them to brown on the edges too much.

Remove the almond from the end of each cookie and squeeze a small amount of red gel, jam or royal icing  into the cavity. Replace almond so that the gel will ooze out around the nail.

The witches hand with the black fingernails was made by my niece Bethany many years ago when she was very young. She covered a mason jar lid with dough – very cute and I have kept it all this time. A thoughtful present for Gene and me 🙂

These are cookies I made earlier and I did not care for Wilton’s sugar recipe that came with the fingers pan. I also used the liquid coloring and you can see that the cookies are not as intense as the ones above. I also did not chill them as long before baking.
