Almond Milk (original or chocolate) Banana Smoothies

Almonds come in high as a  super-food and recently are being promoted for their health benefits.  Blue Diamond Almond Breeze  is advertised on TV, in magazines and other media sources.  At first I was thinking milk flavored with almonds, but no, Almond Breeze is filtered water and real almonds.

There is no dairy, lactose, saturated fat, cholesterol, gluten, or casein.  Only 45 calories per 1 cup for unsweetened chocolate, Vitamin A 10%, Calcium 45%, Vitamin D 25%, Phosphorus 4%, Iron 6%, Vitamin E 50%, Magnesium 6% and it is certified by the American Heart Association.

Wow – a perfect thing for me as I try to lose some weight.   I had this recipe twice recently (my favorite is the chocolate with peanut butter) and it did leave me feeling “full” – this I liked a lot.  Those who are on Weight Watcher’s will be happy to know that a cup of fat free milk is worth 2 points where a 1 cup of Chocolate or Original Almond Breeze is only 1 point.

This is a great combination of almond milk, bananas, brown sugar, vanilla and nutmeg that tastes more like a dessert, but what the heck I would definitely drink this  for breakfast.   This recipe comes from The Epicurious Cookbook which I have adapted to my taste.  I am sure you will change some ingredients to suit your taste buds!

Almond Milk Banana Smoothie

  • 2 large ripe bananas, peeled and sliced
  • 2 cups unsweetened almond milk (chocolate or original)
  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • 2 tbsp. light brown sugar to taste (I used dark as that was all I had; you could also use Splenda)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • add a touch of almond extract for additional flavor (optional – I did not add)
  • dash or two of ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp. peanut butter (if using chocolate – almond peanut butter would be great)

Combine the above ingredients in a blender.  Pour into four small glasses and sprinkle with a dash or two of ground nutmeg.

The author mentioned if the banana slices are frozen you do not need any ice but I  added a handful or so with my frozen bananas anyways.  I always have frozen bananas on hand just for smoothies as I never seem to eat them all when they are fresh.

A suggestion was to use chocolate almond milk and a tbsp. of peanut butter.  This really sounded delicious and it was.  So yummy – you can slightly taste the peanut butter and this smoothie makes for a wonderful drink any time of the day.  Thumbs up for this recipe

  1. I just started using Almond Milk and at first I was a little nervous about it…but than I found so many other uses for it and it is fun to see things turn out. I’ve used it in muffins, frosting, and you can even use it for rice pudding.

Your smoothie looks very tasty. It’s a win-win with peanut butter!

  2. Yum yum! A lot of times, what is good for you doesn’t taste good, but this recipe can rightly be described as both delicious and nutritious!

    • I hear ya – kind of like kale or brown rice – just don’t care for them but they are so good for you. This is a recipe you can play around with – chocolate milk is so good in any thing 🙂
