Ina’s Hot Dogs in Puff Pastry with Cranberry Mustard Dip

What? A hot dog in puff pastry? This is another American phenomenon that I grew up with despite the fact sausages (some say) dated back to pre-Columbus days. We seem to give credit for its appearance in America to a Coney Island vendor named Charles Feldman. I mean you can’t go to any sports event, especially baseball, without eating a hot dog. As one of four siblings Mom would serve these to us but they were boiled and often with her special french fries. When all the kids were young they only wanted hot dogs on the grill – no hamburgers or steaks. To this day I still get a craving every now and then (now knowing how bad this processed food is). I love chili hot dogs and even made a post on Chicago style hot dogs.

Serve as a hot dog sandwich or cut up into bite-size pieces…

The pastry is very flaky and the hot dog pieces want to slide right out…

Then I purchased Ina’s latest cookbook, Go-To-Dinners and there was a recipe for hot dogs in puff pastry which she created during the pandemic. Whoa – if Ina likes hot dogs her version has to be nothing short of delicious.

Ina’s new cookbook…

The dough is 13-inches wide and I forgot to measure the length,,, probably the same!

Trader Joe’s is a favorite store that I love to shop at because there is always some thing new or different. I was making a special trip to pick up some of their seasonal all butter puff pastry which is only available over the holidays. This is a plug for this product – I absolutely love it, only $5.00 for 2 sheets, each sheet is rolled up, easily unfolds with no creases, very easy to work with and it can stretch to fit over your hot dogs. I do thaw it in the refrigerator over night. Forget Pepperidge Farm if you are lucky enough to have a Trader Joe’s near you.

The ingredients..

Only 3 ingredients in the Cranberry Mustard Dip

Serve with condiments of your choice – I love the homemade Cranberry Mustard Dip

Ina's Hot Dogs in Puff Pastry with Mustard and Cranberry Dip

  • 1 sheet of Trader Joe’s butter puff pastry, thawed in refrigerator over night (will cover 4 hot dogs)
  • 4 tsp. Dijon mustard, such as Grey Poupon, divided
  • 4 all-beef hot dogs, such as Hebrew National (I bought these at Trader Joe’s – they are a thin hot dog, not like Ball Park)
  • 1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp. water for egg wash
  • flaked sea salt, such as Maldon and freshly ground black pepper (didn’t use any pepper)

Cranberry Mustard Dip – Ocean Spray: (I added this recipe)

  • 14 oz. can Ocean Spray Jellied Cranberry Sauce
  • 5 tbsp. grainy (I used regular) Dijon mustard
  • 3-1/2 tbsp. brown sugar (I used sugar alternative)

Combine the ingredients in a small sauce pan, cook on low until it melts into a nice sauce; whisk frequently. This is absolutely delicious and I liked it better than just plain mustard.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper.

Dust a cutting board with flour (don’t forget the flour or the dough will stick) and unroll one sheet of the pastry on the board.  Cut four (5-1/2 x 4-inch) rectangles of pastry. You will have a some pastry left over. With the 5-1/2  x 4-inch facing you, brush 1 tsp. of mustard across the lower half of each rectangle. Dry each hot dog on paper towels (optional to pole holes in them before wrapping – kind of like you do with baked potatoes) and place on top of the mustard toward the lower edge and roll the pastry up and away from  you over the hot dog. The hot dog should be totally encased in pastry; pinch the edges. Brush the far inside edge with the egg wash to seal the pastry and place it on the prepared sheet pan.. Repeat with the remaining puff pastry and hot dogs to make four rolls total.

Brush the tops and edges of puff pastry with the egg wash and sprinkle generously with the sea salt and pepper. Bake for 25 to 35 minutes until the pastry is browned and cooked through. Serve hot or room temperature with a mustard of your choice and I really liked the Cranberry Mustard Dip above!

  1. These look so tasty, and a small “sin” once in a while is fine!
I still didn’t manage to go to Trader Joe’s to get the puff pastry. I hope they will not go out of stock by the time I’ll get there….:)

    • Her recipe gave me an excuse to have a hot dog (or two)! I love Trader Joe’s puff pastry. I have not used the Dufour pastry yet and need to find a recipe before the holidays are over – I am sure it will be delicious 🙂 My TJ’s is 3 miles away – so very convenient!

  2. Even Nigella likes to play around with mini weenies! I think it’s fair that if you like hot dogs you’re allowed to eat them. I enjoyed Nathan’s at the Bronx zoo a while back. But like you I’ve put “better” dogs in puff pastry, supposedly for the grand kids, and we all enjoyed them!!!

  3. Now and then, I do love a good hot dog. But overall, I don’t really think of myself as a hot dog person. I’m one of the cultural elite, and as such, I have a strict quota system of food that I must eat and others that I can enjoy only ironically. But this one comes from an Ina Garten book, so I’m confused. I’ll have to call my cultural elite union rep and see if I can get a ruling in my favor. They look amazing, and I have a feeling that I could eat five of them.
