This recipe cooks for almost 3 hours resulting in very tender cabbage and onions which have been infused with apples, bacon and butter! Perfect side served with pork chops and cornbread muffins.Cabbage has always been included in my “favorite list of veggies” since growing a bunch of heads for sauerkraut when I had my 40×120′ garden in the country. Homemade sauerkraut is such a treat and one reason I wish I still had this huge garden. Yes, that is me in the overalls next to a bunch of cabbage plants and some family helpers.
We eventually had to make the fence higher because the deer could easily jump it. I never minded sharing but they also destroyed plants just walking around in my garden. They didn’t eat the cabbage! Some of our deer family back in Manchester many years ago…
This recipe by Joanna Gaines appeared in her cookbook “Magnolia Table” (also the name of her restaurant in Waco, Texas). It was a New York Times Bestseller which infuses her passion for everything family including many Gaines family favorites. I have this same philosophy – sharing recipes with family and friends.
Many who live in the U.S. may know Joanna from her hit TV show, “Fixer Upper” with husband Chip. I never watched their show but when I would catch a glimpse of the show they always seemed to be having fun tearing down walls and turning houses into beautiful places to live. The series lasted from May, 2013 until April, 2018, just in time for the publication of Joanna’s first cookbook.
Dutch Oven Cabbage and Bacon, Adapted
- 8 oz. raw bacon to cover the bottom of a large Dutch oven (I used only 4 slices)
- 8 tbsp. unsalted butter, divided and cut into small pieces (I cut this in half as you really don’t need all that fat, unless you want it of course)
- large green cabbage, sliced into thin wedges
- white onion (I used sweet) cut into 1/2-inch thick slices
- 1-2 honey crisp (I used 1-1/2) apples, quartered
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1-1/4 tsp. kosher salt (I used Morton)
- 1-1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
- parsley to garnish
Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Layer the bottom of the Dutch oven with bacon slices. Scatter half of the butter pieces over the bacon.
Layer the cabbage and onion slices and push the apple quarters into the side of the pot. Scatter the rest of the butter pieces and sprinkle with the vinegar, salt and pepper.
Cover and bake for 2-1/2 to (3 hours). I removed the apple wedges and bacon and placed the cabbage on a nice plate.
Leftovers will keep for about 3 days.
I served this delicious vegetable with Weight Watcher’s Pork Chops and Gravy and my Corn bread Muffins.

Judi, we eat a lot of cabbage over this way, so your recipe would set well on one of our tables. Wow, nice garden. I love the labor of gardening as well as the bounties the garden provides. Perhaps, if everyone grew something they ate, all would appreciate the food they eat just a little more.
My country garden was big not including the corn and pumpkin patch to the right of the picture.I had a lot of fun, learned so much about veggies/flowers/herbs, earned a Master Gardener certificate during the 20 years we lived there. I’m only container gardening now on my deck which is fine but I do miss all the goodies and you are right I appreciate the food I eat and always will.
Well, Judi, I’m only container gardening these days as well. But I love each pinch of herbs, the occasional squash, potatoes and such I do grow.

I don’t think I’ve ever had homemade sauerkraut and I sure don’t know how you could keep up on that big a garden! I usually have about 6 herb plants and a few flowers and that’s it. The Gaines show is fun to catch every once in a while and Johanna is sure talented. I’m pinning this recipe for a try. It sounds delicious!
LOL – I was a lot younger Julie and besides entertaining on a weekly basis, taking care of lots of kids, my garden was a full-time job. She is quite talented and even though I liked her I just wasn’t in to that kind of show.
