This idea appeared in the Food Network Magazine in January, 2013.
I added my herb and flower crystals as another choice in spicing up these slices of avocados. For more information see my post Herb and Flower Crystals for Sweet and Savory Dishes and some ways to use them.
Avocados with a Twist
- avocados
- poppy seeds and a salt of your choice; bacon and smoked paprika; Old Bay Seasoning and Maldon sea salt is always a good choice – I have kosher, Himalayan Pink Salt, Truffle Salt and Vanilla Sea Salt to name a few
- use any combination of spices/herbs that are special to you
- herb and flower crystals (see comment below)
Easy on the salt and add to taste. I recommend tasting the mixtures before you dip the avocado slices. The same with the smoked paprika – add only a little to give the bacon a smokey flavor.
Cut an avocado in half and twist in opposite directions; remove the pit and peel. Press the rounded side into seeds, spices or my favorite, chopped bacon. Slice and serve on top of a salad. I sliced the halves first, then dipped in the different seasonings.
Comment: I first discovered these beautiful and tasty little crystals 2 years ago and I use them in the winter or when I do not have access to these fresh flavors. I have basil, cilantro, fennel, hibiscus, mint and rose; check out Herb and Flower Crystals for my complete post on these lovely crystals. They are not like the fresh herbs from my garden but during the winter when herbs come in little packets these are a great substitute. If the crystals do not stick good, crush them up a bit!

I’m sharing some ideas on how to add a little pizzazz to avocados with Angie @ Fiesta Friday and her two co-hosts this week Sonal @ Simply Vegetarian and Petra @ Food Eat Love.

That looks easy but delicious. I have to eat at least 2 avocados a week, so this would be a great twist to my usual recipe. Thanks for sharing!
Lucky you – 2 avocados + is a lot – I’m lucky to have them once a month! You can use any seasonings you would like just to kick them up a notch!
I love avocados and you’ve dressed them up for company. I’ve never heard of crystals so heading over now to check out your link.
I love them too Julie – the crystals are fun and they do taste good. They add a little crunch to recipes.

I enjoy the Food Network Magazine – they always have some fun ideas! I don’t use the herb/flower crystals a lot because I do prefer the fresh. They do add a little crunch and some flavor to many dishes.
Interesting Judi. Will have to look for these!
