My beautiful Fall lettuce is ready to pick for some delicious, crisp salads. There is nothing better than lettuce freshly picked from my garden – it makes all of my salads shine! This is my favorite thing to grow in the fall (besides garlic which I will be planting soon for a late spring/early summer harvest). I can grow so much in these (3) 3×6′ raised beds to keep me, my family and possibly some guests happy. A couple of tomato plants and a pepper plant were grown here during the hot summer months. I do believe in succession planting and try to follow that practice when I can.
I have taken a lot of pretty pictures and one of my favorite salads which I will post soon. See also my post Starting Lettuce From Seed which gives detailed instructions on how I grow my lettuce and this year’s choices from the Ann Arbor Seed Company.
Yes, I am bringing my lettuce crop to Fiesta Friday #38 to make some delicious salads for everyone. I know Angie and probably all of the party goers love salads because you can make them to suit your taste. Please come visit Angie over at The Novice Gardener for some good times and great food and who knows what else! In addition to Angie, our host, I know the two co-hosts Julianna @foodieonboard.com and Hilda @alongthegrapevine.wordpress.com love salads and they all come up with some of the most creative ways to fix them 🙂

Awesome! Someday I’ll have a large garden, and I plan to grow lettuce as you do. Yours looks so fresh – at the ready for making sandwiches and burgers completely fabulous.
Thanks so much Lisa – I have been eating more sandwiches lately just to use some lettuce. The raised beds are great as you can stick one in anywhere 🙂
What beautiful leaves, Judi – absolutely stunning! And I rather love your green (majolica?) dishes too!! Happy Fiesta Friday!
Thanks Selma – especially the leaves of Forellenschluss which is German for “speckled like a trout”. Yes, that is majolica – I have a number of pieces and it is pretty 🙂
It’s very pretty, Judi both the majolica and the leaves!!
Gorgeous speckled leaves Judi and nothing can be fresher! Enjoy your fall bounty 🙂
Thank you Naina – you nailed it as I just told Selma that lettuce has a German name for “speckled like a trout”. I am definitely enjoying it as I eat some every day whether in a sandwich or a big salad 🙂
Oh lovely and so healthy!
It is very pretty Cindy and fun to eat – I am eating more lettuce these days 🙂
That lettuce looks great, I wish I could grow my own vegetables!
Thanks Michelle – you do not need a lot of space for a small garden and you would be surprised how much you can grow. I use to have a 40×120′ garden not including the pumpkin and corn patch so this is a nice change and very manageable 🙂
I think even with the cats digging up anything i would plant I wouldn’t have much luck, I can’t even keep potted herbs alive haha
Beautiful!
The leaves are gorgeous are they not? I love growing my own lettuce 🙂
What a bumper crop! Enjoy 🙂
Yes, that’s for sure – that is why I like to grow my own lettuce from seed as there are so many varieties out there 🙂
Beautiful beautiful and healthy looking lettuce! Bravo!
Thanks Sue – it is amazing the different kinds of lettuce I can grow. I am looking forward to next spring and seeing what the Ann Arbor Seed Company has to offer.
Wow, how beautiful, Judi! Fresh lettuce is such a treat and to have it in the fall is outstanding! Your pics are so pretty! Thanks for sharing them with us at FF! 😀
Thanks so much Julianna – I cannot get any fresher than this! It is fun to go out and pick my own salad. The weather is perfect and the lettuce is thriving 🙂
I love a good salad with a nice vinaigrette. Your lettuce is gorgeous.
I know Julie it is almost too pretty to eat. The lettuce loves our cool weather but I have to be careful as a hard frost could ruin it 🙂
I know it is delicate and that is why it is so amazing with what ever you serve with it. We’ve had frost twice dipping into the low 30’s. I am sad to say goodbye to my produce. 🙁
My lettuce loves this weather 30’s to 50’s. We have had a few light frosts but not a hard one and that is why I am keeping an eye on the weather. Then I will pick it all before that happens as it does keep a long time in the refrigerator 🙂
I forgot to congratulate you on being featured on Fiesta Friday! Congrats!!

Judi I envy you for this post, I can only imagine how fresh and tasty they are . Your salad are beautiful. Have a great weekend 🙂
Thanks Linda – I am definitely enjoying my Fall lettuce as it really makes a difference in a salad – none of that store bought lettuce for me right now 🙂 Enjoy your weekend – it is cold (lettuce loves it) and rainy here!
Wow I adore how fresh the home grown speckled lettuce are…. its a treat to enjoy homegrown fresh veggies and greens…. your Salad looks so fresh and delish aunt Juju. .. lovely shots tooo… 🙂 🙂
Thanks Chitra – the speckled lettuce has a German name and it is so tender. I think I did capture its beauty in my pictures 🙂
Gorgeous. I’m happy to make my own salad at Fiesta Friday. Great idea
Thanks Tracey – I certainly have the base for some good salads 🙂
Beautiful lettuce! I wish I had a garden too! 🙂
Thanks – the lettuce is not only pretty but delicious! Raised beds are the way to go should you have a garden some time 🙂
Oh yes – delicious! Especially when it’s fresh and just picked up:)
Those lettuces are so pretty – great photos! I am going to look for that speckled variety to plant next year.
Thanks Hilda – I am very pleased with my Fall lettuce, especially the unusual leaves of ‘Forellenschluss’ and very tasty too 🙂
if only I could learn to grow…they look awesome and fresh too. I would eat salad the whole day!!!
I could too Liz with different kinds of toppings and dressings. Lettuce is one of the easiest things to grow from seed. You only need a small area – I live in Zone 6 so I grow it according to my weather 🙂
Fall lettuce. Love it! Red leaf lettuce is one of my most favorites.. Gorgeous photos, Judi! <3
Thanks Prudy – I love soft and sweet lettuces too. Hard to believe it is almost Nov. and I am still enjoying my Fall lettuce 🙂
How did I not know I could grow fall lettuce in our zone??? Thanks to you, Judi, now I do. Love the variety you’re sharing with us…so pretty to look at and I imagine delicious too! <3
Thanks a lot Nancy – I am still enjoying it with salads every day. Very easy to grow and I always start my seeds indoors and then transplant them in the garden 🙂
Truly beautiful lettuce selections – I love those speckled, frilly types, so pretty to look at (and delicious to eat!).
Thanks – the speckled lettuce is actually a romaine. Both were very good and I plan to grow them in the spring too 🙂
