Normally I just like my cantaloupe plain, but once in awhile it is nice to serve it as a light dessert. Making a simple lavender syrup makes the cantaloupe shine.
Cantaloupe with Lavender Syrup
- 1/2 cup sugar (cut back if too sweet)
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup white dessert wine (I used Sugar Snow made with maple syrup from Sandhill Crane’s Winery)
- 2 tbsp. orange juice
- 1/4 cup fresh or dried lavender buds (I used some I had just dried)
- 1 large cantaloupe cut into cubes or use a melon baller
- mint leaves for garnish
Bring sugar, water, wine and orange juice to a boil; reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes. Stir occasionally to dissolve the sugar. Remove from the heat, add the lavender buds and steep for 1 to 2 hours. I steeped the flowers for 2 hours and the syrup was delicious.
Pour over the prepared melon and serve.
