Barbecue Beef Sandwiches in the Slow Cooker

Using a slow cooker  is a handy way to serve a crowd on a football Saturday and something you can make ahead of time and reheat.  My recipe for Pulled Pork Sandwiches and Slow Cooker Pulled Chicken are other good recipes to make in a slow cooker.

Barbecue Beef Sandwiches in the Slow Cooker

  • 1/4 cup + 1 tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 2 (1 lb.) flank steaks
  • 1 cup onion,  diced
  • 1 cup tomato paste
  • 3 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 tbsp. molasses
  • 3 tbsp. cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp. chili powder
  • 1 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tsp. dry mustard
  • 1 tsp. ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

Combine 1 tbsp. brown sugar and the black pepper and rub over both sides of the steaks.  Combine the 1/4 cup brown sugar with the rest of the ingredients and add to the slow cooker.  Add the steaks, turning to coat both sides.

Cover and cook on high for 1 hour and on low for 5 to 7 hours.  My original recipe said 7 hours on low but after 5-1/2 hours the meat was very tender and I could shred it.  You just need to allow enough time depending on the slow cooker  you are using.

Shred the meat in the slow cooker with a wooden spoon and mix well; the sauce will be absorbed by all of the meat.

My notes say to serve with red onion slices and dill pickles.

  1. I love your recipe. Believe it or not, out here the supermarket don’t seem to have Flank Steak. Look for them today so I could make Carne Asada, have to make a run to the butcher shop. But I’m thinking this recipe would work wonderfully with Mutton. Thanks for the post.

  2. Where I live I can get any type of meat or fish, produce – you name it, and organic or not. I have never cooked with Mutton or venison for that matter. Let me know if it turns out 🙂
