My first harvest of my own Fall lettuce in my raised beds (use to have a 40×120′ garden) and I made a very simple vinaigrette to dress my greens with. Yes, I planted lettuce – I meant to post some other pictures of what I grew this year (especially my tomatoes) in my (three) 3′ x 6′ raised cedar beds. A far cry from my 40′ x 120′ garden plus a pumpkin and corn patch when we lived in the country! Maybe this winter when I am yearning for warmer weather and planning my next spring garden I will post some pictures.
I planted my seeds in early September and transplanted them in the garden a few weeks later. The seeds are from The Cook’s Garden; All Season Butterhead mix with 25% Four Seasons mix and 15% each of Arctic King, Burpee’s Bibb, Buttercrunch, Matchless and North Pole lettuces (I love this mixture); and City Garden Mix which is a multi-pellet mixed greens consisting of red and green leaf lettuces (another good choice).
Out in the garden!
Ready to harvest…
My Zyliss lettuce spinner which I could not do without. I use it for all my lettuce whether I buy it at the store or if I grow it in my garden. It helps keep the lettuce fresh, crisp and clean.
Balsamic Vinaigrette Over Homegrown Lettuce
- 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
- 3/4 cup olive oil
- 1 tbsp. fresh garlic, minced
- salt and pepper to taste
- dark brown sugar to taste – I used 1 tbsp. (helps round out the vinaigrette)
- your favorite greens
- garnish with cherry tomatoes, sliced red onions, blue cheese and any other ingredients you might like
Combine the dressing ingredients and mix well. Toss with your greens and garnish with tomatoes, red onions and blue cheese. This vinaigrette is a favorite as I really enjoy the flavor of balsamic vinegar.
