Mango Lassi

I never heard of this “dessert” until a nephew mentioned it while we were eating at a local Indian restaurant. He didn’t order one but it made me curious.

Lassi is a simple yogurt-based beverage/dessert consisting of yogurt (Indian yogurt but Greek yogurt will do – just add less liquid), water or milk and typically some spices and/or fruit. There are versions of sweet lassi, or a salty lassi, spicy lassi, or savory lassi. It is rich in Vitamin D and lactic acid and a boost to the immune system. It’s like a smoothie basically. I chose to make one of the popular versions – the Mango Lassi – which goes real well with yogurt.

You can use many different forms of mango – of course fresh is always the best. It’s available frozen, canned, as a puree or pulp. If you use puree or pulp don’t add any extra sugar – one 30 oz. can of mango pulp has 38g of sugar!!!

Mango Lassi

This recipe comes from indianhealthyrecipes.com.

  • 1-1/2 cup Mangoes, chopped (fresh, ripe mangoes or 1 cup canned pulp)
  • 1 cup curd (Indian yogurt (dahi/curd), plain or Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk (or water or 4 ice cubes) won’t need all the liquid if using Greek or plain yogurt
  • 2-3 tbsp. sugar (don’t add if you’re using canned pulp)
  • 1/4 tsp. cardamon powder (optional – I added)

To Garnish:

  • 1 tsp. pistachio nuts, chopped
  • 1 pinch saffron strands
  • 4 tbsp. whipped cream (I didn’t add)

In a blender add the pulp, yogurt, milk and cardamon powder. Blend until the mango lassi is super smooth. It should be thick yet of pouring consistency.

Taste test and cool for an hour. Garnish with the nuts and/or saffron.

  1. This is one of my favorites to order when dining in Indian restaurants. I sometimes also order the salty version, which helps with soothing very spicy foods.

It’s great to make it at home, and be able to adjust flavors according to personal taste. 🙂

  2. I’ve always enjoyed a fruity lassi! So delicious. I’m not a mango fan but they are certainly quite good when blitzed up like this. And cardamom adds such a great flavour.
