Apple Cider-Amaretto Cocktail

Oh no – not another apple cider recipe – I promise this is the last one. I had enough apple cider left to make a cocktail instead of just drinking it plain.

I live in apple country – Michigan is a big apple producer. A typical year yields 25 million bushel harvest. A light frost in the Spring of 2020 did affect some parts of the state so this number will probably be lower. We are experiencing a number of cancellations during covid-19 but nature never gets cancelled and Michigan once again has had a good year.

As I have mentioned before I am not a “cocktail” drinker but I do enjoy seasonal drinks like this one. Amaretto, apple cider and cinnamon – a perfect Fall cocktail.

Apple Cider-Amaretto Cocktail

Cinnamon-Sugar Rim:

  • 2 tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 -1  tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp. maple syrup

Apple Cider-Amaretto Cocktail:

  • 2-3 oz. amaretto liqueur – I like Disaronno – see Note (if you want to make a kid’s cocktail substitute 1/4-1/2 tsp. almond extract for every 2 tbsp. Amaretto) I used 1/2 tsp. for 2 oz. Amaretto. See below…
  • 6 oz. apple cider
  • 1/2-1 tsp. cinnamon
  • cinnamon sticks to garnish
  • apple slices to garnish
  • ice cubes

Pour maple syrup into a shallow dish. Mix cinnamon and sugar in another small dish. Press the rim of each glass into the syrup, then into the cinnamon-sugar mixture.

Fill glasses with ice. Add amaretto, cider and cinnamon in a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously for about 20 seconds. Pour into glasses and garnish with cinnamon sticks and apple slices.

Makes 1 or 2 cocktails

Note: Amaretto is a sweet Italian liqueur that originated in Saronno. It originally was flavored with bitter almonds but now it is prepared from a base of apricot stones, peach stones or almonds which provides the almond-like flavor of the liqueur. It’s delicious on its own, mixed in a cocktail or how about your coffee for a special holiday brunch.

The picture below shows vodka which I didn’t add – it looks like I forgot to get the apple cider in the picture.

I meant to add the almond extract version. It was very good and the kids will love it, even adults if you don’t want the alcohol. I used 1/2 tsp. almond extract in place of 2 oz. Amaretto. I also added an apple slice.

  1. A very fallish drink Judi. I really like the maple suyrp cinnamon sugar rim and the non-alcoholic version is a great idea.
We had an exceptional apple crop over here this year as well. Although it been difficult to get pickers. Have a great Thanksgiving…

    • Thanks Ron – I thought so too! I just made the version without alcohol and its good – I meant to do that before I posted this. You know I have been to cider mills numerous times but can’t ever recall actually apple picking. You do the same Ron – have a nice Thanksgiving.
