Hibiscus-Lime Vodka Tonic with Homemade Hibiscus Syrup

I’m mainly a wine drinker who also loves a good liqueur and an occasional bloody mary. Recently, I’ve been using edible hibiscus flowers in recipes, such as Hibiscus Tea. So, when my Food Network Magazine had recipes for using edible flowers in cocktails I was inspired to make this and use my homemade hibiscus syrup.

In case you’re wondering the garnish is a dried and sweetened hibiscus flower. Thanks for the suggestion Ronit – they are delicious!

This beautiful hibiscus flower is 4-inches wide and the deepest red…

After one day of blooming the hibiscus flower rolls up and eventually falls off…

Hibiscus Syrup:

I looked at different recipes online and allrecipes.com appealed to me because of the flavorful ingredients, such as ginger and fresh lemon.

  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/3 cup dried hibiscus flowers
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • one (1/2-inch) piece of fresh ginger, thinly sliced
  • 1 lemon, zested

Bring all of the ingredients to boil in a medium saucepan. Reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to steep for 5 minutes before straining the solids and adding to a bottle for storage in the refrigerator.

  • 1/2 oz. lime juice, chilled
  • 3/4 cup (give or take) tonic water, chilled
  • dried and sweetened hibiscus flowers and a slice of lime to garnish

Combine the first three ingredients in a tall glass. Add ice and top with the tonic water. Garnish with a sweetened hibiscus flower and a slice of lime.

  1. Such a perfect summer drink. Love the flavors in the drink and syrup, not to mention the color.
Glad you enjoy the sweetened flowers! I also bought them recently, and have been munching on them way too often! 🙂

  2. i love rosella flowers. i bought a beautiful hibiscus sugar once. it made a beautiful pink colour of the syrup i made.

  3. This is so very refreshing Judi…love Vodka and usually add pomegranate juice to it,would love to try it with the Hibiscus syrup and the dried flowers…

  4. Me, too! Mostly a wine drinker, and when I have a cocktail it can’t be strong. I just don’t like the flavor. We have relatively new friends who moved next door, about 6 years, and it took about 3 years for both of them to make me a cocktail that didn’t make me choke!!! And vice versa, when they’re here, I have to make triple strength cocktails! Anyway, love what you did here.

    • Thanks – it’s a refreshing drink and the alcohol can be left out. I think I switched to just wine because restaurants, friends, family always were a little heavy on the liquor. Wine is easy as you don’t need mixers or condiments such as limes, cherries, olives, etc.
