I know this is late in “tomato season” like it is here in Michigan. Plan ahead for next year and buy yourself one of these tomato slicers. I have been using this gadget for a few years and I absolutely love it. I have always had trouble cutting a straight thin slice of tomato for a sandwich or just to eat with a little salt and pepper and a tomato slicer is my answer.
One of Gene’s pet peeves was evenly sliced tomatoes and for some reason I could not do this. The tomato slice started out thin but by the time I got to the other side it was fatter. He always cut up the tomatoes – that was his job. Zyliss has good products and I thought this was definitely a gadget I needed, especially with all the tomatoes that are consumed every season!
It comes in two parts; place the tomato on the bottom half and slowly press down the serrated top half giving you perfectly sliced tomatoes. Tomatoes need to be on the firmer side – soft ones get kind of mushed because of the skins. I always core the tomatoes first too!
I’m sharing this “must have gadget” for all you tomato lovers at Fiesta Friday.
Tomatoes that have been peeled don’t keep as nice a shape but they are still delicious! I have a family member who loves tomatoes but does not like the peel on fresh tomatoes…

Lovely 😊
Thanks 🙂
I can’t cut a tomato evenly either! Time to find this gadget!
Glad to see someone else can’t cut a tomato straight. With the serrated edge it slices right through for perfectly sliced tomatoes.
I’ve never tried such a gadget, but glad to learn it actually works so well. 🙂
It has worked for me and I eat fresh tomatoes every day 🙂
Good to know!
This will slice vine ripened tomatoes? I haven’t tried this one but others have just smashed them into mush, they simply were not sharp enough.
As I mentioned with the peel on you get beautiful slices (see picture), if you peel the tomatoes they get a little mushy but still look pretty good (picture). I wouldn’t recommend it if it didn’t work for me Liz 🙂 The pictures speak for themselves!
The top has serrated edges just like a tomato knife (Wusthof) The tomatoes are Michigan grown tomatoes, or vine-ripened 🙂
I will look for it, thanks for the tip.
It must be so convenient now. I guess I should go get one for myself. Here they sell a similar one but they call it egg slicer. Never thought about using it for tomatoes.
I have an egg slicer as well but the edges are not serrated and it is much smaller to fit a egg. The serrated edges are important for slicing tomatoes.
Ok now I get the difference. Thanks for sharing this dear Aunt Juju😊
Very cool gadget! I usually use a serrated knife, but I can never get them even. Thanks for sharing!
It really works too Debbie, just like a serrated tomato knife but it cuts a whole tomato at once. I can make lots of blt’s in a hurry!
Cool! Yes I have a difficulty when I get to the end of a tomato, the slices are uneven, or worse yet, they collapse in on themselves. Not very nice when plating for a party… At any rate, thanks for bringing this to Fiesta Friday! Now that I’m moving into a larger kitchen, I may have room for some useful gadgets.
Thanks Diann – it’s great for sandwiches or making a tart. I like the tomatoes to be even – as you said plating is important.
This is cool, Judy! I have a similar gadget that cuts eggs so I’ll try it for smaller tomatoes.
I don’t think it will work as you need a tomato slicer with serrated edges. But it’s certainly worth a try.
You’re right, Judy, it doesn’t work. I may have to pick up your gadget! Happy days to you!
This is quite similar to the popular egg slicer, aah but would this one and its serrated edges would be so practical for tomatoes! Thanks for sharing at Fiesta Friday!
Serrated is important when it comes to cutting tomatoes. I have a knife just for tomatoes and this gadget and both have serrated edges.
I have the same problem! I didn’t know such a thing existed but now I’m longing for one!! Those slices are gorgeous!
Thanks Mollie – the gadget does work!
