When you have your own garden you cook whatever is ready to be picked. I have a small raised bed garden and my snow peas are producing like crazy – I need to pick them every day. I especially like to grow these as I like them small and tender – not what you usually buy at the grocery store or even the Farmer’s Market. You can see the peas on the left of the plate below; perfect, sweet and just how I like them. The ones on the right have bigger peas and probably still taste good but will be tougher. Baby veggies are the best 🙂
This is an old recipe probably dating back to my first Chinese cooking class back in the 80’s. I am slowly trying to finish up making the recipes I still have in my old file. My favorite way to fix them is in a stir-fry and from the recipes I have already posted I love them especially with my favorite seafood, shrimp! Just search shrimp or snow peas and you will find lots of other very good recipes.
Shrimp, Broccoli and Snow Pea Stir-Fry
Marinade for Shrimp:
- 1 lb. peeled and deveined jumbo shrimp
- 1 tbsp. peanut oil
- 1 tsp. sesame oil
- 1 tbsp. rice wine or Sake
- 1 tsp. tomato paste
- 1/2 tsp. soy sauce
Combine the above ingredients and marinate for at least 30 minutes and up to 3 hours.
Sauce for Shrimp:
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
- 4 tbsp. rice wine
- 4 tsp. cornstarch
- 2 tsp. sesame oil
- 1tsp. sugar
- 1 tsp. soy sauce
- ground pepper to taste
Combine the sauce ingredients and set aside.
Cook the prepared broccoli and snow peas separately in your microwave. I just push vegetable, fresh and 1 and the veggies are cooked perfectly; set aside.
- broccoli florets
- snow peas, trimmed
- 3 tbsp. peanut oil
- 1 tsp. ginger, finely sliced
- 1 tsp. garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup peanuts or cashews, toasted
Heat a saute pan with the peanut oil and cook the shrimp, tossing continuously until the shrimp turn pink and they curl up into a ball. Remove and keep warm. Stir-fry the fresh ginger and garlic briefly; add the shrimp sauce and cook until the mixture thickens. Add the shrimp, microwaved snow peas and broccoli and toss just until heated through. Serve over rice and top with some toasted nuts.

I am sharing this very good shrimp stir-fry with Angie at Fiesta Friday #74 and her two co-hosts Loretta and Caroline. Come join us 🙂

I love snow peas and snap peas! Unfortunately, mine were completely demolished by either a rabbit or groundhog. A few are trying to grow back and are giving me tiny peas 🙂 Oh, well, maybe I’ll start another batch in the Fall. In the meantime, I’ll get them from the stores which will not be as nice as home-grown, as you mentioned. I like them raw or sautéed quickly like what you did here.
I love my garden, even if it is small. Gone are the days of the 40’x120′ garden plus pumpkin and corn patch! This “city” garden is much easier to take care of. My country garden I had to drive the golf cart with all my tools through the woods to the open field where the garden was. I always make room for my snow peas 🙂
This looks so fresh and tasty! 🙂
Thanks – it really was – I love the combination of shrimp and snow peas and throw in any other veggie you like 🙂
Oh Yum love them in a stir fry too! Have a great weekend!
Thanks so much Cheryl – I’m not sure why I do not get notifications of your posts! How are things in Florida? My FL family is coming up for the holiday weekend. Happy 4th!
Not sure either as to why you are not getting notifications, I post daily on https://clwiser.wordpress.com and have a follow button-try that Judi?! Glad your FL. family is coming to Michigan to see you how much fun will that be! Woo-Hoo.
I just followed your suggestion Cheryl – so we shall see – thanks!
Okay very good. All my sites should have follow buttons if I recall correctly! See YOU & take care.
Your snow peas looks perfect and I love your stir fry! 🙂 Happy FF!
Thanks Petra – it actually is pretty healthy and very, very good! I know you love your shrimp too 🙂
I sure do! 🙂
Welcome to the Fiesta Judi and thanks so much for this wonderful stir-fry dish. It always adds that extra touch when you can brag about part of that meal coming from your garden doesn’t it? I love your raised beds. Those snow peas look delicious. What else do you have growing in there? I’m excited about our raised beds too, I’ll be blogging about that soon. I volunteer in these gardens and I’m in charge of the 6 raised beds there, we’ve got so much in there right now, and I can just pick and choose what I like. Just picked some swiss-chard and made a quiche. Love the shrimp in your dish. Have a wonderful weekend, and keep on gardening 🙂
Thanks Loretta – I wish I had my big garden (40′-120′) to really brag about my veggies! Let’s see – tomatoes, peppers (hot and sweet), carrots, green beans, herbs, edible flowers, spinach, lettuce, garlic and onions! Thanks for co-hosting – you do such a good job 🙂
I’m envious of your garden peas – mine were killed by frost in May. Still, it is a pleasure to see another’s success and what you’ve done with them.
Thanks Hilda – I remember those days when not everything did well. Between the critters that found a way in (we had a 8′ fence’) and Mother Nature…- well, you know how it goes.
Healthy and so pretty – what more could one want?
Shrimp and snow peas – a favorite combination 🙂
That looks so yummy!! Thanks for sharing your recepie 🙂
Thank you for stopping by – I will be over to your blog to say hello 🙂 Have a good week!
Thanks for visiting 🙂
I am absolutely jealous! That garden looks beautiful and those Snow peas look absolutely perfect!! I love eating snow peas too and used to love just steaming them (Just a little) with some salt and eating them like a crunchy snack! This stir fry looks so good too… I shouldn’t be looking at recipes when I’m so hungry 😉
Thanks so much Dini – it’s always fun to use veggies/herbs from your own garden. I barely cook these peas and just love them in any stir-fry 🙂
How lovely to be able to pick and cook your own homegrown produce. I like this recipe with Asian flavors.
Thanks Fae – now it is a small garden but I get just as much pleasure from it. Much easier to take care of too!
This looks so great, I now have a craving for shrimp!
I have to control myself when it comes to shrimp – I just love it and look for excuses (recipes) to use it 🙂
Your fresh garden peas must be very tender…a nice way of using them.
Thanks Karen – I pick them daily and like them small as you can see in the picture above. Will you have a garden in Florida ?
I’m going to have an herb garden and plant a lemon or lime tree. My landscaper says he doesn’t think I would be successful growing tomatoes but I may give it a try.
You’re so lucky to have your own garden. I’m envious!
Hi Patty – I have only (3) 3’x6′ raised beds – they don’t take a lot of space but provide quite a bit of veggies/herbs and flowers 🙂
Woooow gorgeous
