It’s time to fire up the grill and I did so with these great lamb burgers in pita bread. I bought Bon Appetit’s Best Recipes 2015 and this burger from Anissa Helou was one of the recipes. Of course you could always make these into patties and use regular buns. Using pita bread was a fun way to serve them. I made a spicy peanut butter slaw to go with them but a salad with cukes, red onion, feta, parsley, tomatoes olive oil and red wine vinegar or lemon juice would be delicious too!
Pita Lamb Burgers on the Grill
- 2-1/2 lb. ground lamb
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 to 3/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 tbsp. coriander
- 3/4 tsp. cumin
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 2 tsp. kosher salt
- 1-1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper (love my Peugeot battery operated pepper mill for jobs like this)
- 1/4 cup olive oil, plus more for grilling
- 8 (8″) pita breads with pockets (I also used the mini ones), cut in half
- Sriracha sauce to garnish (I added)
- next time I will add some cheese, maybe feta
Combine the above ingredients except for the pita bread. Cover, and chill for at least 1 hour and can be made 8 hours ahead of time. The pita breads can be stuffed 1 hour ahead of time and chilled.
Prepare your grill for medium heat and oil the grate. I also oiled both sides of the pita bread to prevent sticking. Open each pita pocket carefully with a knife by cutting along the seam, halfway around perimeter. Spoon filling into the pockets and spread to the edges. Seal, pinching the open edges.
Grill until filling is cooked through and bread is crisp, about 5 minutes per side. I grilled them twice as long!

I am enjoying this warmer weather and I know a lot of us feel that way. Grilling and warm weather just go together and these pita lamb burgers will certainly add to the party at Fiesta Friday #64. Thanks much to Angie and her two co-hosts this week, Loretta and Ginger.

Oh and there’s the star of the show, lamb pita burgers :). These look so good, great ingredients and flavor, and yes definitely barbeque weather coming up. Love your pepper mill, I must confess, I’ve never seen a battery operated one before 🙂
The salt and pepper mills were gifts to Gene. When you have a lot of fresh pepper to grind they sure come in handy. Of course the kids always loved them 🙂 The lamb is very good and I might make patties the next time and put some other goodies on them 🙂
I hope I’d find my interest in grilling. These look so tasty and delicious, Aunt Juju. Happy FF. 🙂
Thanks Jhuls – grilling is the only way to go during the warm months. Keeps the heat out of the kitchen. Happy FF 🙂
OMG – you make it sound like it’s already summer! LOVE pita, LOVE bbq, and absolutely LOVE the idea of lamb burgers!!! Now bring on the sunshine 😉
Great to have you as a guest at this party – Fiesta Friday wouldn’t be the same without you!
It’s beautiful here in Michigan – the temps this week have been nice – 70’s and sunny! The burgers would be good as patties too Ginger with some cheese and other condiments. Happy FF 🙂
I like the idea of grilling the pita burgers. Super cool idea.
Thanks – They tasted great – the juices from the meat crisp up the pita bread 🙂
mmm….you make it sound even more delicious. …
These looks delicious! This is an intresting idea, I would have to try!!! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks – it is an easy way to grill as the juices stay inside the bread and add some great flavor. The recipe said to cook 5 minutes per side but I cooked them for 10 minutes per side. Just do it to your taste 🙂
Looks very yummy, Judi! 🙂
Thanks – they were very yummy 🙂
Love lamb burgers and these are scrumptious Judi!
Me too Johanne! Very easy using pita bread and it crisps up so nicely on the grill 🙂
This looks delicious Judi! We are eating more lamb. I got some really wild stuff and quit eating it for a while but I am reforming since getting some delicious flavorful meat, mainly the chops. I would love to try the burgers!
I have members in my family that still do not care for lamb. The burgers you can season anyway you want and the grilled pita bread just soaks up the flavors. I would like some cheese on mine though – next time 🙂
