For two years now I have been wanting to make an authentic King Cake. So, I was not going to let another year go by without doing something. This idea comes from David Gaus, chef of the Bayou Bakery. A few dollars for some Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls, colored sugar and of course a “baby” and in less than 30 minutes you will have a simple, but yummy surprise for your family. HAPPY MARDI GRAS to everyone!
I want to share this with the partygoers at The Novice Gardener’s Fiesta Friday #5. There is still time to make these for your kids 🙂
King Cake Using Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls
- 1 (12.4 oz.) can of Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls (any flavor icing)
- yellow, purple and green sugar
Press each roll into an oval shape; then overlap by about 1″ and press down. Do this all the way around until you have a circle. Bake as directed. I would not use parchment paper as the icing sticks too much, a nonstick baking sheet is much better. Insert a “baby” if desired after the rolls have baked from the bottom and let people know there is a baby in one of the rolls.

Getting ready to bake and ready for the icing!
Ready to eat and enjoy!

This is so cute and a quick treat! I love that little guy. Am I wrong or isn’t he supposed to be stuck inside the cake? We always do that here and whoever gets the piece with him in it has to make the cake next year. Maybe we made it up to pass on the duties, lol.
Thanks Ngan – there is a “baby” inside one of the cinnamon rolls; I just thought I would leave one outside to show what he looks like. I did not hide him too well as a foot was sticking out – I should have taken a picture of that. Oh well, next time 🙂
Great idea – Looks so festive, and delicious too! A perfect Mardi Gras dessert 🙂
Thanks Nancy – when I saw the email from the Today Show I knew I could at least make these for Mardi Gras. We ate them for breakfast 🙂
Have a nice Happy Mardi Gras too 🙂
Well thank you 🙂
What a great idea! This is seriously cool 🙂
Thanks – I thought so too 🙂

It is absolutely cool! Maybe next year I’ll make this. Today I made beignets, instead. Maybe I can post later tonight. Happy Mardi Gras! XOXO
Thanks Angie – please do post your beignets – another favorite any time of the year. My son-in-law has a good recipe and they annually make a trip to New Orleans 🙂
Happy Mardi Gras, Juju!
Same to you Patty (even though it is the day after) 🙂
