There are so many versions of this snack mix; I have seen recipes for barbeque, Italian and Cajun. This first recipe is probably one of the originals and one my family likes. I have also included a quick recipe using ranch dressing and Parmesan cheese and one I call Christmas Crunch. There is a lot of versatility in what ingredients you use depending on your taste. Be creative!
Traditional Party Mix
- 1/2 lb. cashews
- 1/2 lb. salted spanish peanuts
- 1/2 lb. salted mixed nuts
- 3-3/4 cups slim pretzels (I like to use Goldfish pretzels)
- 3 cups shredded wheat squares
- 5-1/2 cups cheerios
- 4 cups rice cereal squares
- 1 cup butter, melted
- 1 tbsp. (or so) Worcestershire sauce
- 1-1/2 tsp. garlic salt
- 1-1/2 tsp. seasoned salt
Comment: There is a lot of salt in this recipe, too much for me now, so I have tried to cut back where I can. For instance; use nuts that are not salted, use garlic powder instead of garlic salt. I have a low sodium Worcestershire sauce that I use for all my recipes. You can also add the seasoned salt to taste instead of using the whole amount. Of course you can use different nuts and cereal, just depending on your taste.
Combine the first 7 ingredients in a large bowl. Melt the butter and stir in the seasonings. Add to the cereal and nuts mixing well. Pour onto a baking sheet and bake at 250°F for 2 hours, stiring gently every once in awhile.
Cheese Ranch Snack Party Mix
- 9 cups corn chex (rice chex or wheat chex or a combination)
- 2 cups pretzel thins
- 2 cups Pepperidge Farm Cheddar Goldfish crackers
- 3 tbsp. butter, melted
- 1 (1 oz.) pkg. ranch salad dressing mix
- 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine cereal, pretzels and crackers. Melt butter and pour over cereal mix; stir well. Add salad dressing mix and cheese and stir to coat.
Microwave cereal mix, uncovered, on high for 3 minutes, stirring after each minute. Spread on waxed paper or foil to cool.
Christmas Crunch Party Mix
- 2 cups each: wheat cereal, rice cereal, corn cereal and oat cereal squares
- 1 cup slivered almonds
- 1 cup pecan pieces
- 1 cup sweetened dried cranberries
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 cup honey
Line 2 large baking sheets with aluminum foil or parchment paper; spray well with cooking spray. Layer half of the cereal, nuts and cranberries in each pan; mix gently.
Melt butter, add honey and whisk to combine. Drizzle half of the butter mixture over each pan; stir gently to coat. Bake at 325°F for 30 to 35 minutes stirring every 10 minutes. Cool and break apart large pieces.
