Roast Beef Sliders with Caramelized Onions, Horseradish Sauce and Swiss Cheese

I really like the idea of “small sandwiches”, or sliders and so glad you can buy rolls which are a perfect size. Probably one of the favorite sandwiches I have made are Ham and Cheese Sandwiches  which are easily made ahead, frozen and taken out as needed. I also have another post on sliders here which includes a number of different recipes. These are great for parties and people of all ages love them.

So, with that background I wanted to make another version for family gatherings, parties or individual use. Roast beef, Swiss cheese, prepared horseradish sauce, caramelized onions and a butter drizzle won me over. I  viewed a few recipes and made this recipe my own!

It is Super Bowl 53 on Sunday so I thought I would make this a “football post” in case you’re looking for something new to serve to your crowd 🙂

Roast Beef Sliders with Caramelized Onions, Horseradish Sauce and Swiss Cheese

This recipe can be baked right away (after refrigerating for at least 4 hours or overnight) or frozen individually without baking and taken out as needed.

  • 1 tbsp. olive oil
  • 2-3 large onions, thinly sliced and also cut
  • 12 Hawaiian hamburger buns (these are bigger than sliders but smaller than regular hamburger buns)
  • 1 lb. of roast beef, shaved
  • 12 thin slices of Swiss cheese (can use any cheese or combination of cheese you like)
  • 6 oz. jar of prepared horseradish sauce (add to taste – I used most of the jar as I love horseradish and the kick it gives)
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
  • 1-1/2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. onion powder
  • 1 tsp. dry mustard
  • poppy seeds (optional)

Get the oil hot in a large skillet and cook the onions for about 15-20 minutes or until they reach a nice color; set aside.

Melt the butter and add the Worcestershire sauce, garlic and onion powders and dry mustard.

Separate the rolls  and spread a little horseradish sauce over the bottom half of each roll and place on a baking sheet (I sprayed the pan first with cooking spray). Evenly divided the roast beef, evenly divide the onions, and place a slice of Swiss cheese on top. Add the top halves of the rolls.

Brush the butter mixture over each roll, sprinkle some poppy seeds on top (optional) and refrigerate. After the mixture has hardened on top of the rolls cover with foil that you sprayed with a cooking spray. Refrigerate over night.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and bake, uncovered for 15-20 minutes or until cheese is melted.

  1. This will be a great start to a hearty superbowl menu.Make alot because they will go fast!!d

  2. Yum! I love the idea of these buns, although I’ve been surprised at how many different actual slider buns have shown up at my grocery store! I really love the combination of the horseradish sauce along with the caramelized onions. I could almost forfeit the meat!

    • Thanks – you know I could leave out the beef too – caramelized onions, horseradish and cheese – good on its own. It’s amazing how many choices there are in slider buns – the Hawaiian hamb. buns are a little bigger but not that big – I like this size!
