E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial Yogurt-Covered Pretzels

How many of you remember E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial movie by the one and only Steven Spielberg? It’s been awhile; June 11, 1982, with a very young Drew Barrymore. I remember it and just recently watched it again on HBO. I might be called a senior citizen but I still enjoy watching “kid” movies 🙂

E.T. was the cutest little alien and the movie has a happy ending. Nothing like the aliens the movie industry is producing now.  This movie is funny, not scary. “HOME” is E.T.’s favorite word…

I found two traditional Fall flavors of yogurt flavored pretzels; pumpkin spice and apple cider. Let me tell you both flavors are good but I will always favor an “apple flavor” over pumpkin.  I also used milk chocolate and white fudge covered pretzels. Add a little chocolate in the “eyes”  (candy melts in different colors) and some sprinkles, candy eyes or small candies and you have a tasty little dessert. Get the kids involved with this recipe as this is a great idea for a party

E.T the Extra-Terrestrial Yogurt-Covered Pretzels

  • yogurt-covered pretzels such as pumpkin spice and/or apple cider which I am sure are seasonal; also milk chocolate and white fudge to make year round
  • candy melts in different colors (Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Party City, baking store or online – I prefer to buy Merckens or Peter’s melts – better quality of chocolate)
  • you could always make a firm white icing and tint it different colors
  • different sprinkles and small candies for the eyes
  • decorator bags and any round tip to fill in the eyes

Lay out the pretzels in a single layer on parchment or wax paper. Heat the candy melts and fill the eyes with a pastry bag, a spoon or use a paint brush. Use only 1 color at a time unless you have a bunch of helpers. Don’t handle the pretzels as the warmth from your hands will melt the covering on the chocolate. Before the chocolate sets add your sprinkles, candies or small candy eyes.

Comment: Melt one color at a time; I start with 50 seconds at 50% power, remove and stir for 30 seconds at 50% power; then it might be another 30 seconds or even 15 seconds. Do this slowly as the texture can change if it gets too hot! Take your time if you are using the candy melts.

    • Thanks – I immediately thought of ET when I made these “alien pretzels” probably because I recently watched the movie again for the ??? time. I never cried (I don’t think) but it is a heart-warming movie.

  1. I made something like this for halloween, but you’ve taken it to a whole different level! Thanks for sharing your creation with us at Fiesta Friday this week!

    Mollie

  2. Judi, I believe being a senior gives us the right to watch all those types of movies. We’re re-watching Harry Potter just now.
Now, I must admit your E.T Yogurt-Covered Pretzels have me wishing the grand kids lived closer so we could make these together. I’m going to shot this post off to my kids so they can have a E.T pretzel making party and send me pictures.

    • Thanks Ron – I’m glad you feel that way. Harry Potter is another favorite – I have all the movies, never read the books though. Too busy reading cooking and gardening magazines/cookbooks. You’re in Sweden so where are your kids? What a nice thing for “grandpa” to do – hopefully they make them and have fun doing so 🙂

  3. So colorful and cute and I bet they’re delicious! I love the movie ET and so many years ago I first watched it on HBO. I cried when I thought ET died.

  4. We loved that movie! These little E.T.’s are adorable. It is just beyond me how you can look at a pretzel and come up with E.T. Such creativity and your little guys (I think it’ a he?) is so cute.

    • Thanks Julie – E.T. is a classic movie and I never get tired of watching it. The eyes and the shape of the pretzels (the pumpkin and apple spice) made me think of E.T. I just watched the movie a few weeks before!
