There are so many simple ideas in the Food Network Magazine and this one is perfect to make with the kids or if you want a quick bread to have on your table. I changed it slightly by adding the sugar decorations.
There are different ways you can color your eggs besides using the “traditional PAAS” kits or food dyes by McCormick. Try using natural dyes and you probably have many of these ingredients in your pantry. There are many, many sources online with instructions and the ingredients needed to achieve different colors. How about paprika for a peachy salmon color, spinach for a green color, or ground coffee for tan-brown eggs. A favorite source comes from Food.com!
Okay, last year a sister made a fancy Easter bread…
But this year I took a shortcut…
Breadstick Mini Egg Nests
- 6 hard boiled eggs
- 1 (11-oz.) tube refrigerated breadstick dough
- orange zest, grated
- nonpareils
- beaten egg
- sugar decorations (optional)
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Separate the dough strips and sprinkle with grated orange zest. Twist two strips together and form into a circle, pinching the ends to seal. Make a total of 6 wreaths. Place on a greased or parchment lined baking sheet.
Brush with a beaten egg and sprinkle with nonpareils. Lightly crack one side of each egg and place cracked side down in the center of each wreath. Bake for about 15 minutes or until the bread is lightly browned. The eggs may crack but the cracks will close up as they cool. The dye does bleed some on the bread but I think it looks nice. Also, the egg will stick to the bread if you paint it with egg wash and use the nonpareils.
Allow the eggs to cool completely before attaching the sugar decorations.
You can also use dyed raw eggs which will look a little speckled but they will be cooked through.

Woohoo! They look so pretty. And how lovely Judi that you used natural dyes.
Thanks SKD – I wanted to use natural dyes but due to the time available and I only dyed 6 eggs I used the artificial dyes. You can get some beautiful colors using natural ingredients and next year I hope to do this…
I will look forward to that. These look very pretty.
Hi Judi looks like you had fun creating!!!
Thanks Cheryl – I did have fun!
These are adorable? Who wouldn’t want their own serving?
Thanks Julie!
I never had these cakes/breads that come with hard-boiled eggs placed in the, They look so delightful. 🙂
Thank you Fae – the eggs really give the bread a special touch 🙂
I’ll have to remember these ideas when my grand daughter is older!
Thats’s why I posted this recipe – perfect activity for Easter. Wish I still had the young ones around but I have a couple of girls in the family that would still enjoy making these!
This is just the cutest thing! What a great recipe idea 🙂
Thanks – the recipe is very simple and a great way to involve the kids (or adults LOL)
Great idea to use the breadsticks for individual nests, Judi! They are adorable. 🙂
This was just a cute, quick and simple idea. I did not take the time to make a “fancy” Easter bread. Thanks for stopping by 🙂
