Baby Snapping Turtle

Oh happy days I saved a baby turtle today.  As I was just about to get into my car to run some errands, lo and behold I could see this baby turtle in my driveway.  Upon closer examination it is a snapper – a long ways from some water at least for a little guy like him; he was only about 2 inches long and that included his tail.

So, I scooped him up in a plastic container and drove down to “the pond” which is part of my subdivision’s common area.  The first spot I picked had too many predators around – for example  2 blue herons that would have loved to eat him as a snack!  So, I picked another spot and carried him down to the shore to set him free.

At least here he might stand a chance of surviving –  of course in my mind I knew that he would survive and  live a long happy life.  I waited a few minutes and watched him swim away – he was happy and  I felt real good inside  🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

  1. So sweet Judy! Glad you saw the Lil’ guy and took him to his new habitat! I love baby creatures. We have protected sea turtles adjacent to our land those Lil” guys at night scampering to the ocean crest is a sight! Then scamper back to there protected dunes…Cheryl

    • What fun Cheryl and how lucky you are to witness the little turtles. I have seen them on the Discovery Channel or maybe National Geographic – quite a site 🙂 I have had my share this year of “babies” – rabbit, birds, even a bat which I will not go into and now this cute turtle.

      • We just love babies don’t we Judy? All creatures. We really have a large selection of protected species here in Florida. Not only sea turtles, manatees (sea cows) Least Terns (birds) countless others. From one creature lover to another “keep a look out”! Your Fl. Bud. Cheryl

  2. It amazes me how something so cute can grow up to be so ferocious. Bravo to you for finding him a safe haven…no heron or soup pot in sight! 😉

    • They sure can be mean if confronted. When we lived on the farm in Manchester and had a pond we were always worried about the kids because they frequently wanted to pick them up. Luckily noone was ever chomped on, or the dogs for that matter either 🙂
