Mom’s Apple Walnut Bread

This bread was a favorite of my Dad’s so we always had this during the holiday season.    Very moist with the apples and a little crunch with the walnuts.

  • 3 cups flour (at first glance this seemed like a lot but the amount is correct)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 cups apples, peeled, cored and chopped into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 3 tbsp. butter, softened

Combine all of the dry ingredients; stir in the apples and walnuts.  Beat the egg slightly with milk and butter.  Pour into flour mixture; stir just until evenly moist.

Spoon batter into a well greased pan; spread to side of pan with a spoon, leaving a slight well in the center.  The batter is very thick and chunky.   Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 10 minutes; smaller pans from 45 minutes to 60 minutes.  Just test it with a cake tester and if it comes out clean it is done.

Serve with a cup of hot chocolate or a cold glass of milk.

Makes 1 large loaf or 3 small ones
