This is the icing I use to decorate all of my cakes. First you have your cake, then my recipe Sanders Buttercream Frosting and finally this decorator icing for all of the flowers, trim, and so on.
Buttercream Decorator Icing
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1-1/2 cups Crisco
- 4 cups confectioners’ sugar
- vanilla to taste (1/2 to 1 tsp.)
- 4 tbsp. cornstarch (only needed in hot weather) – I have never used this!
Cream butter and Crisco; add half of the sugar and the vanilla. Add the other half of the sugar and mix to incorporate and have a smooth texture.
If icing is too stiff, add water or an egg white. If icing is too soft add more confectioner’s sugar. The icing will keep several weeks when stored in the refrigerator.
In the picture below the icing is the bear and the trim around the large single layer cake. The frosting is the large single layer cake below it.

The icing is the tractor itself and the frosting is the background.
